Adjarian Leader Against CIS Peacekeepers’ Withdrawal

(Tbilisi, February 9, Civil Georgia) – “It is impossible to replace the Russian peacekeepers in Abkhazia,” Georgian President’s representative in Abkhazian conflict settlement Aslan Abashidze stated after the meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister on February 8.

Head of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara Abashidze held negotiations in Moscow on the Abkhazian conflict.

Georgian government agreed to prolong Russian peacekeepers’ mandate till June 30. Displaced persons from Abkhazia continue protesting at Eguri River, administrative border of breakaway Abkhazian and the rest of the Georgia, demanding peacekeepers withdrawal.

Russian peacekeeping forces are deployed in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone under the auspices of Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), since mid-1994.
