President Saakashvili said on October 3 that an independent judiciary should be a cornerstone of “the new wave of democratic reforms,” announced by him during his state of the nation address on September 16.
Speaking at a televised meeting with Supreme Court Chairman Kote Kublashvili, Saakashvili said that although corruption had been eradicated in the judiciary, “there is a sense in society that judges know their verdicts in advance; or verdicts are ordered – this should end soon.”
He also told Kublashvili that he would only interfere in judicial matters to ensure that “no one interferes in the judiciary.”
