Saakashvili Calls for Unity and High Voter Turnout

In a televised address to the nation late on Wednesday President Saakashvili called on voters for a high turnout for the October 5 local self-governance elections in order to ?show unity? to Georgia?s ?ill-wishers.?

He said election?s day will be ?a decisive day for Georgia?s history? a decisive moment for a better future for our children.?

?I want to address residents of every village and city: let?s show our activeness, show firmness, show calm, everything that will put an end to the hopes of our ill-wishers to enslave and make Georgia kneel down,? Saakashvili said.

?Those people who want disorders in Georgia are dreaming about seeing a passive Georgia on October 5? they dream to see a broken Georgia? I want to tell you, they want to see a pessimistic Georgia tomorrow, but we should show them a Georgia full of hope? We will show them a Georgia full of courage thanks to your activeness? We will show them that we are united.?

?Hundreds of years will pass and if we are united tomorrow, Georgia?s future generations will be grateful to us, grateful to those people who will appear at polls tomorrow,? Saakashvili said.

In his address Saakashvili outlined four major tasks Georgia faces ahead.

?The first is Georgia?s total energy independence. We already have alternative gas pipelines; we have an oil pipeline; we are broadening electricity transit and electricity purchases; and we the Georgian government are undertaking [measures] to not depend only on one very unreliable source and to achieve energy independence,? the Georgian leader said.

Saakashvili said that the second ?historic task? is to see the last Russian soldier leaving ?our homeland and make the Georgian nation?s more than two-century-old dream come true.?

Georgia?s NATO-membership and gaining additional security guarantees for Georgia is the third task, he said.

?I am sure, especially after launching the Intensified Dialogue with NATO, we will achieve this goal,? he added.

?The fourth and the major task is the restoration of rule of law and justice on the entire territory of Georgia, I mean in the rest of Abkhazia ? lower part of Abkhazia – as well on those territories of South Ossetia that are currently out of our control. We will achieve this goal as well,? Saakashvili said.
