Ivanov Denies Annexation Accusations

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov said on September 29 that Russia has no intention to annex Georgia?s territories.

?Russia is being accused of trying to annex certain territories of Georgia. We do not want and do not intend to annex anything. We want the frozen conflicts, and not only in the Caucasus, be settled in compliance with common rules and standards,? RIA Novosti news agency quoted Ivanov as saying in Slovenia, where he is attending a meeting of the NATO-Russia Council.

President Saakashvili said in an address to the UN General Assembly on September 22 that Russia is annexing breakaway South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

The Russian Defense Minister also said that Georgia has chosen the way of force to solve the South Ossetian and Abkhaz conflicts, and that Russia is categorically resisting this.

?We should not forget that 90% of the population of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are Russian citizens,? he added.

Ivanov also said that Russia is concerned about intensive military procurements by Georgia and added that several NATO member states from ?young Europe? are providing Georgia with weapons.
