Russia’s Ivanov Backs S.Ossetia, Abkhazia Peace Formats

Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov warned on September 16 that attempts to undermine current peace formats in South Ossetia and Abkhazia will further complicate the conflict settlement process.

“The mechanisms for the settlement of conflicts were created long ago. First of all, it is necessary not to violate those agreements that were achieved earlier because if they are violated constantly it simply raises the temperature of the conflict and its settlement becomes more and more difficult,” Ivanov said in comments aired on Russian television.

On its web-site, Russian Channel One television quoted Ivanov as saying that if Tbilisi demands the withdrawal of Russian peacekeepers from the conflict zones, Moscow will coordinate its activities directly with Sokhumi and Tskhinvali, the capitals of breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia, respectively.
