Kokoity Slams Western Powers for ‘Double-Standard Policy’

South Ossetian leader Eduard Kokoity, who is currently visiting Moscow, said at a news briefing on September 15 that the main obstacle on the way of peace settlement in South Ossetia is “a double-standard policy pursued by several western countries” against the breakaway regions of South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Transdnestria.

“Despite statements made by the European Union and several western countries, the forthcoming referendum in South Ossetia [scheduled for November 12] will definitely influence the future status of the republic,” Interfax news agency quoted Kokoity as saying.

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Terry Davis said on September 13 that secessionist authorities in South Ossetia “are wasting time and effort on the organization of a ‘referendum on independence’ in November.” On the same day, EU envoy for South Caucasus issues Peter Semneby said that the referendum will be “meaningless” to the European Union.
