Threat to Gas Supply

Russia plans to suspend natural gas supplies to Georgia on April 16, citing the necessity of repair work on the North-South gas pipeline.

The International Oil and Gas Corporation, however, has said that the suspension would not affect users. It said that supplies from Azerbaijan?s Shah-Deniz field would be increased.

Already Georgia receives one million cubic meters of natural gas from the Shah-Deniz field. The increase will need to be substantial, as Gazprom supplies 2.4 – 2.5 million cubic meters a day. The exact amount of gas to be supplied from the Shah-Deniz field will be unveiled at a news briefing later on April 16.

Meanwhile, the Georgian National Energy Regulatory Commission (GNERC) is due to discuss new gas tariffs today. Gas distribution companies reportedly appealed to the GNERC to set new gas tariffs in February.

Currently consumers in Tbilisi pay GEL 0.34 (approximately USD 0.19) per cubic meter of gas.
