Abkhaz Parliament Urges Russia for Recognition

The Parliament of breakaway Abkhazia passed a statement on October 18 urging the leadership of Russia to recognize Abkhazia?s independence and establish an ?associated relationship? with Abkhazia, Apsnipress news agency reported.

Alexander Torshin, the Vice-Speaker of Russia?s upper house of Parliament, said that Russia?s Federation Council is going ?to seriously engage in discussing the appeal? of the Abkhaz Parliament.

?Russia, including those [state] structures to which the Abkhaz Parliament?s appeal is addressed, should take a very attentive and respectful approach towards this initiative and study all the legal aspects in the frames of the Russian Federation?s legal base,? Torshin told Interfax news agency on October 18.

The Abkhaz Parliament?s appeal reads that Abkhazia is de facto independent and Russia now only has to legalize it through recognition.
