Burjanadze Slams Russia at UN Security Council

Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze unleashed harsh criticism towards Russia for backing secessionist authorities in Abkhazia, while addressing the UN Security Council on July 11, triggering anger of Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, the Associated Press reported.

Nino Burjanadze said the Russian peacekeepers have failed to perform their duties in the Abkhazia conflict zone and called for the UN-led peacekeeping operation there.

She also noted that the Russian peacekeepers are in fact responsible for 10% of all crimes in Abkhazia. Burjanadze also accused Russia of arming secessionist authorities.

“I’m very disappointed. I think Ms. Burjanadze made a big mistake by this kind of a diatribe against Russia? I think it’s completely unacceptable, first of all, and counterproductive in terms of the goals of pursuing the political settlement of all the issues in that conflict,” Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin was quoted by the AP.

Some diplomats in the UN, who spoke on condition of anonymity with the AP, said there were no immediate plans to consider the Georgian request on replacement of the Russian peacekeepers with the UN-led operation.
