Opposition Boycotts City Council

20 members of the Tbilisi City Council (Sakrebulo) from the New Rights, Labor, Republican, Conservative and Industrialist parties announced on June 9 that they will boycott the Sakrebulo sessions, citing ?negligence? of the Council?s opinion by the Tbilisi Municipality.

?The City Mayor [Gigi Ugulava] does not take into account Sakrebulo?s opinions … therefore, we consider it necessary to join our colleagues from the Parliament and boycott the sessions of the Tbilisi Sakrebulo,? Chairman of the New Rights faction in the Sakrebulo Giorgi Mosidze told Civil Georgia on June 9.

The opposition parliamentarians from the Republican, Conservative and New Rights parties are boycotting parliamentary session for more than two months already. Opposition lawmakers demand reform of the Interior Ministry; direct elections of the city Mayors and change of current election system.
