MPs Pass Resolution Supporting Georgia’s NATO membership

The Georgian Parliament passed a resolution on May 11, in which it expressed political support for Georgia’s integration into NATO.

The resolution instructs the government to secure “full and timely” implementation of the reform targets necessary to join NATO and requested that the Parliaments of the NATO member states and the NATO Parliamentary Assembly support Georgia’s “duly and successful” accession into the alliance.

Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze said at the Parliament’s session on May 11 that adoption of this resolution is especially important on the eve of a top level meeting between Defense Ministers from the NATO member states in June.

“We request that the Parliaments of the NATO member states [lobby]their governments to support our country’s integration into this organization,” Burjanadze said.

The Georgian Parliament also claims that NATO membership is a guarantor of Georgia’s statehood.

The Georgian Parliament adopted the first resolution supporting Georgia’s integration into NATO in 2002.
