Tbilisi Mayor Dismissed

Chief of the President?s Administration Gigi Ugulava will replace Zurab Tchiaberashvili as Tbilisi’s Mayor, President Saakashvili announced on July 12.

Mikheil Saakashvili said that he will nominate Zurab Tchiaberashvili, who was appointed as the capital city’s Mayor last April, as Georgia?s Representative to the Council of Europe.

?I am sure that Gigi Ugulava is a very good nomination. I have known him since those times when we both worked in the NGO sector [before the 2003 Rose Revolution] and I am sure he will successfully continue reforms, which are underway in the Tbilisi City Hall,? Zurab Tchiaberashvili, ex-Mayor of Tbilisi, told Rustavi 2 television.

Gigi Ugulava was appointed as the President?s Chief of Administration in April. Previously he served as Governor of the Samegrelo region, in western Georgia, and Deputy Security Minister.

MP Giorgi Arveladze, who is the political secretary of the ruling National Movement party, will become acting chief of the President?s administration.
