S.Ossetian Official Slams EU

Vice speaker of the breakaway South Ossetian parliament Yuri Dzitssoity snubbed the EU for its intentions to play a role in mediation of the South Ossetian conflict.

Speaking to the news agency Regnum Dzitssoity was asked to express his opinion regarding the EU’s intentions to play a more active role in South Ossetia, namely to provide 2.5 million Euro for rehabilitation works.

“The thing is, the EU has invested more than a billion Euros in Transcaucasia and some 70% of this amount in Georgia,” Dzitssoity responded. “In South Ossetia they reconstructed a school in Djava and a train station in Tskhinvali. They also planted what we call “chicken-houses” – houses nobody can possibly live in. How else did they [EU] help the South Ossetian side?” he added.

“At the same time, they invested significant sums in retraining the cadre and organizing various coferences in Georgia. Of course, international mediators want political compromises in exchange for money. I want to say that if we wanted to sell our independence, we could do it without the EU. But the sovereignty of South Ossetia is not for sale and not up for negotiation. So, the work of the EU should be of a humanitarian character and not just one single organization, including this one, should lay claim on resolving the political issues,” Yuri Dzitssoity said.
