Abkhazia, S.Ossetia to Propose Conflict Resolution Plan to Tbilisi

Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Goga Khaindrava confirmed on March 18 that South Ossetia might propose a plan for resolving the persiting conflict in that region.

The Russian daily Kommersant reported on March 18, based on unnamed sources close to the separatist leadership of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, that the leaders of these two breakaway regions ? Eduard Kokoity and Sergey Bagapsh, respectively – who are both currently visiting Moscow, might offer “state union” to Georgia, patterned after the union of Serbia and Montenegro. Such a union would foresee relations between the equal parties to essentially establish a loose confederation.

?Yes, there is this kind of information. Yesterday, while I was in the Russian Foreign Ministry, I met, by chance, Eduard Kokoity there and he told me that some new proposals are being prepared at the moment. Let?s wait and see what they will propose to us,? Goga Khaindrava told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) Georgian service on March 18.
