Saakashvili Vows to Arrest Journalist’s Attackers

President Mikheil Saakashvili demanded once again from the Adjarian Autonomous Republic to investigate the recent attack against journalist in Adjara.

“I officially commissioned Aslan Abashidze not to spare efforts in order to punish those responsible [for beating up a journalist] within ten days. Now 6 days are left till expiration of the deadline. If he does not meet my demands, the General Prosecutor’s Office will open a criminal case against Adjarian law enforcer officials and everything will be done to arrest them,” President Saakashvili told reporters on March 9 while visiting France.

Journalist Vakhtang Komakhidze of Rustavi 2 TV company was assaulted by a group of unknown men as he stopped his car at a police check point in Adjara.

Komakhidze stated an assault was linked to his journalistic assignment to investigate illegal dealings of Abashidze and his family. “I found out that around 40 relatives of Abashidze are on high [official] positions in Adjara and they accumulated huge wealth,” Vakhtang Komakhidze told Rustavi 2.

Journalists blamed local police and security officials for an attack.
