Authorities Try to Tackle Crime in Svaneti

(Tbilisi, August 22, 2003, Civil Georgia) – The grave crime situation in the western Georgian high mountainous region of Svaneti was discussed at a session of the National Security Council on August 22.

Interior Minister Koba Narchemashvili said a great deal of illegal weapons are kept in the region, “thus preventive measures are to be implemented” in order to seize arms in Svaneti.

The anti-crime operation will be conducted with the participation of internal troops, the Security Ministry and Special Services.

At the government’s session on August 20, President Shevardnadze!
said the crime situation has been much aggravated in Svaneti, and urged the law-enforcement bodies to establish order in the region.
