ISFED Alarmed with Violation of Baker’s Plan

(Tbilisi, August 3, 2003, Civil Georgia) – Election watchdog NGO International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED) voiced concern regarding the Parliament’s failure to approve rule of composition of the Central Election Commission before August 2, which was based on the US recommendations delivered in Georgia by James Baker in early July.

“Georgian President, Parliament and leaders of the political parties are responsibl!
e for failure to adopt Baker’s Plan,” the ISFED statement issued on August 2 reads.

The ISFED warns that the holding of the November 2 Parliamentary elections by the existing Central Election Commission, which is “absolutely discredited”, might trigger social unrest and political confrontation in the country.

The ISFED called on government and the Parliament to adopt a new Election Code, based on the Baker’s Plan in the nearest days.
