Security Minister Admits Presence of Illegal Armed Groups

(Tbilisi February 12, 2003. Civil Georgia) – Georgian State Security Minister Valeri Khaburdzania told the MPs at the Parliamentary session today that there are several illegal armed groups operating under the shadow of private detective firms.

The Security Minister said that at the moment law enforcement agencies carry out inventory of this kind of groups.

Khaburdzania said “beside the illegal armed groups acting under the shadow of detective firms there are several groupings in western Georgia operating near the administrative border between breakaway Abkhazia and the rest of the Georgia”.

Leading opposition parties accuse authorities in backing several illegal armed groups, claiming that these armed groups will be used to destabilize situation in the country on the eve of the upcoming Parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 2003.
