AES not to Withdraw from Georgia

(Tbilisi, Civil Georgia, December 6, 2002) – Director-General of the American power distribution company AES-Telasi Ignacio Iribarren dismissed today Georgian President’s statement that the US company will soon leave Georgia.

At the government’s meeting on December 4 President Shevardnadze said that the AES-Telasi become “a burden for the county,” which will withdraw from Georgia because of the financial problems.

Ignacio Iribarren said at the news briefing on December 6 that some political groups, which wish the AES to leave Georgia, intentionally misinform Georgian President.

The US company AES rented the Tbilisi electric power distribution system for 99 years in 1999.

AES also controls the power facilities in Gardabani, where the company AES-Mtkvari was created.
