Chargé d’Affaires Rood: U.S. Concerned over ‘Continuing Borderization’ on Tbilisi-Controlled Territory

Elizabeth Rood, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy to Georgia said on January 15 that the U.S. is concerned about the worsening situation along the dividing line between the Russia-occupied Tskhinvali Region/South Ossetia and Georgia proper, which includes “continuing borderization,” and erection of checkpoints “in territory that has long been administered by Tbilisi.”

According to Elizabeth Rood, “these worsening conditions are creating humanitarian difficulties, making life harder for people” on both sides of the line of occupation. “We once again call on the de facto authorities to open the crossing points along the administrative boundary line (ABL) to allow freedom of movement, to allow humanitarian access, to allow the people in Tskhinvali region to reach necessary medical care and to live normal lives,” she stated.

The State Security Service of Georgia (SSG) informed Civil.ge yesterday that the occupying forces erected “illegal installations” on Tbilisi-controlled territory near Chorchana village of Khashuri Municipality, at the dividing line with Tskhinvali Region. Slamming the fact as “provocative action,” SSG said it showcases “illegal borderization.”
