PACE Co-rapporteurs Make Monitoring Visit to Georgia

Co-rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) paid a fact-finding visit to Georgia on September 17-18, for the monitoring of the country‘s “obligations and commitments.”

The group comprised of Titus Corlățean (Romania, SOC) and Claude Kern (France, ALDE), held meetings with Georgian officials, discussing the “recent political developments, the independence of the judiciary, the judicial reform, the functioning of the High Council of Justice, and the organisation of elections.”

At the meeting with the co-rapporteurs on September 18, Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia said the Government of Georgia appreciates the constant support of the PACE to Georgia, which has been expressed in a number of resolutions. 

According to PM Gakharia’s press office, the parties spoke also of the recent situation in occupied regions and gross violations of human rights there. The Georgian PM thanked the PACE for condemning the “destructive actions” of the occupation forces, and for the “firm support” of Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
