The Military Committee, NATO’s highest military authority, discussed Georgia’s progress on defense reforms and implementation of the Substantial NATO-Georgia Package at its session on Georgia on January 16.

According to the Georgian Defense Ministry, the Chief of the General Staff, Major General Vladimer Chachibaia, who attended the meeting on behalf of Georgia, briefed the NATO officials on security challenges facing the country and the region, as well as on recent achievements and future plans of NATO-Georgia cooperation.

“[At the] meeting with Georgia, the Chiefs of Defense received an update on the security situation in and around the country, the strengthening of its institutions and ongoing defense reforms,” the Chairman of the Military Committee, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stuart Peach said at his press conference.

“The Chiefs of Defense noted the security situation in the region remains challenging and welcomed Georgia’s constructive approach to resolving the situation,” Peach said, adding that the Allies recognized Georgia’s “significant and enduring contribution” to NATO’s operations and missions.

The 180th meeting of the Military Committee in Chiefs of Defense session was held in Brussels on January 15-16.

The Military Committee meets three times a year, at the level of Chiefs of Defense to discuss NATO operations and missions and provide the North Atlantic Council with consensus-based military advice on how the Alliance can best meet global security challenges.
