Syria Recognizes Abkhazia, South Ossetia

Syria has decided to establish diplomatic relations with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, making it the fifth United Nations member state to have recognized the two regions’ independence from Georgia.

According to the Abkhaz “foreign ministry,” Sokhumi and Damascus “agreed on mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries at the level of embassies, which reflects their common aspirations for developing relations in all areas.”

The Tskhinvali “foreign ministry” echoed the statement, saying the two republics “declare mutual recognition and establishment of diplomatic relations at the level of embassies.”

The Syrian foreign ministry confirmed the reports in a statement as well, saying it decided to exchange recognition with the two entities and establish diplomatic relations at the level of embassies.

Russia, Venezuela, Nauru and Nicaragua are the only other nations that recognize the two regions’ independence from Georgia.
