Ambassador Zurab Pololikashvili Appointed as UNWTO Secretary General

Zurab Pololikashvili, Georgia’s Ambassador to Spain and permanent representative to UNWTO, has been appointed the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) for the period 2018-2021. 

Pololikashvili was nominated by Georgia and elected by consensus at the 22nd UNWTO General Assembly being held in Chengdu, China, following the recommendation of the 105th UNWTO Executive Council.

Zurab Pololikashvili,  who served as the Minister of Economic Development in 2009-2010 and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2005-2006, said that expanding the UNWTO membership and attracting new countries to join the Organization would be among his top priorities.

UNWTO is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and universally accessible tourism. The organization’s membership includes 157 countries, six Associate Members and 500 Affiliate Members representing the private sector, educational institutions, tourism associations and local tourism authorities.
