Georgian Dream Winning Majority in Adjara’s Supreme Council

Like in national parliament, the six-party Georgian Dream coalition will also have majority of seats in local legislative body of Adjara Autonomous Republic, according to early official results.

Elections for Adjara’s 21-member Supreme Council were held simultaneously with the parliamentary polls on October 1.

With most of the votes already counted, Georgian Dream leads in Adjara with 57.6% and President Saakashvili’s United National Movement party has 37%, according to the Autonomous Republic’s election commission.

15 seats were up for grabs in the Supreme Council under the party-list, proportional system and remaining six seats were contested by majoritarian candidates in Adjara’s six single-mandate constituencies.

Georgian Dream candidates lead in three single-mandate constituencies, including Batumi, Kobuleti and Khelvachauri.

UNM’s candidates are in lead in three other constituencies – Keda, Shuakhevi and Khulo.

In a party-list contest, Georgian Dream is winning with 65.4% in Batumi, which is Adjara’s capital, and UNM has 29.9%.
