Putin-Saakashvili Talks to Decide Peacekeepers’ Issues

President Saakashvili said on July 18 that the Georgian government will make its final decision about the Russian peacekeepers in the conflict zones after his meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which is expected to take place on a sideline of CIS summit in Moscow on July 21-22.

?We will make a final decision over this issue after I arrive in Moscow to meet with the Russian President. We are now coordinating certain issues of this meeting and I hope it will be held duly. You know that this issue was discussed at the G8 Summit in details and very intensively,? Saakashvili told reporters.

The statement was made after the Parliament passed a resolution on July 18 instructing the government to launch procedures for an immediate withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping forces from the conflict zones.

?We have peaceful intentions, but, at the same time, we will not let [conflicts] freeze and [will not let] deterioration of situation in the conflict zone. The final decision of the Georgian authorities will depend on our consultations, on our relations with Russian partners. And this process will become more intensive than it was before,? Saakashvili added.
