Georgia Signs Europe’s Energy Community Accession Agreement

Georgia signed on October 14 an agreement to join the Energy Community, an organization uniting the EU and its neighbors with the aim to create an integrated European energy market.

The protocol on the accession of Georgia to the Energy Community was signed by Georgia’s Energy Minister Ilia Eloshvili in Sarajevo, which hosted the organization’s 14th ministerial council.

Georgia and the European Commission launched negotiations on country’s accession to the organization in February, 2016.

By signing the Energy Community treaty, a member undertakes commitment to implement key EU regulations and rules on electricity and gas networks, environment, renewable energy, energy efficiency, oil and on energy statistics.

“By receiving a status of the contracting party, we plan to embark on the implementation of new round of reforms for approximating Georgia’s energy sector with the European Union energy market rules,” Energy Minister Ilia Eloshvili said while addressing the Energy Community ministerial council, which has unanimously supported Georgia’s accession.

Along with the EU states, members of the Energy Community are: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine.
