Tbilisi Condemns Russian Defense Minister’s Visit to Sokhumi

Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov’s “so called ‘visit’ to occupied Abkhazia” shows that Russia has never intended to live up to its 2008 ceasefire commitments, the Georgian Foreign Ministry said July 15.

It said that Serdyukov visited the breakaway region on July 13 “with the goal of inspecting the Russian-established occupation regime” in Abkhazia.

“Russia is intensively engaged in a military build-up in Georgia’s occupied territories. This includes the accelerated construction of military bases, the concentration of military contingents (including divisions of both the defence ministry and the federal security service) and the deployment of rocket systems. This military build-up has resulted in the deployment of military units in Georgia’s occupied territories, laying bare Russia’s aggressive policy with respect to Georgia,” the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.
