German Embassy Demands Georgian Media to Retract False Report

German embassy in Tbilisi said it “demands” from those Georgian media sources, which have reported that outgoing German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will take a senior position in Russia’s gas monopoly, Gazprom, “to correct this false information.”

Some Georgian national television stations have reported recently this information, claiming that Gazprom’s offer was “a reward” for Steinmeier’s efforts to lobby in favor of Russia in EU-funded fact-finding mission into the August war.

The German embassy said in a statement on October 8, that it “categorically denies” these reports and expressed hope “that such journalistic mistakes will no longer occur in the future.”

On October 7, Rustavi 2 television stations, as well as two other major national TV networks – Imedi and Public Broadcaster – aired a separate report in which the television stations claimed that one of the members of the EU-funded fact-finding mission, a German law professor, Otto Luchterhandt, was paid by Gazprom for “pro-Russian stance.”
