South Ossetia Talks to Open in Moscow

A session of a quadripartite Joint Control Commission, involving the Georgian, South Ossetian, Russian and North Ossetian sides, is scheduled to open in the Russian capital of Moscow on July 14.

Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues Goga Khaindrava will be representing the Georgian side at talks.

The issues of Russian arms seized by the Georgian troops in breakaway South Ossetia and three Georgian peacekeepers being detained in a Tskhinvali jail, will top the agenda of talks.

On July 13 Georgian authorities blocked several Russian trucks carrying humanitarian aid bound for the breakaway South Ossetia. This incident at the Georgian village of Ergneti in the conflict zone further increased tensions in the region.

Secretary of the Georgian Security Council Gela Bezhuashvili is also visiting Moscow. He held talks with the Secretary of Russian Security Igor Ivanov on July 13.

After the talks both officials reiterated that a peaceful resolution of the South Ossetian conflict is a top priority for Tbilisi and Moscow.
