Russian Transport Ministry Cuts Links to Georgia

The Russian Ministry of Transport announced that air, sea, land and railway links, as well as postal communication to Georgia have been cut starting from October 3, Russian news agencies reported.

The flight from Tbilisi to Moscow on the morning of October 3 ?was postponed,? officials from Georgian Airways said.

Russia cites the non-payment of air traffic service fees by Georgian airlines as the reason behind the decision. Officials in Moscow also say that the postal link was cut after many parcels sent to Tbilisi failed to reach their destinations. No specific reasons behind the cutting of land, sea and railway links have yet been cited.

Last December, Russia banned the import of a number of Georgian agricultural products.

In March import of Georgian wine was also banned by Russia, citing the low quality of products, then in May Russia also banned imports of Georgian mineral waters under the same pretext.

Russia closed down the only legal crossing border with Georgia in Zemo Larsi in July, citing repair works at the border checkpoint.
