Russian MFA: Arrested Officers were in Charge of Base Pullout
Russian Foreign Ministry condemned the arrests of four Russian military officers by Georgia, demanding their immediate release.
The four officers were arrested on September 27 on charges of espionage. Eleven Georgian citizens were also arrested for alleged ties to the Russian intelligence service.
?The Russian Foreign Ministry stresses that the Russian servicemen from the Russian Troops in the Trans-Caucasus serving in Georgia are in charge of the withdrawal process of the Russian military bases from Georgia? The Russian side precisely meets the commitments undertaken under the bilateral agreement [to pullout from the bases]? But our servicemen are constantly confronted by provocative actions from the Georgian side,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in its information note.
?In defiance of their commitments, the Georgian authorities are creating obstacles to the activities and living conditions of Russian servicemen in Georgia. They are subject to groundless accusations. A series of arrests carried out by the Georgian authorities on September 27 is one more outrageous attack that confirms the anti-Russian stance of the Georgian leadership,? the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
The Russian Foreign Ministry summoned Irakli Chubinishvili, Georgian Ambassador to Moscow, to express its protest regarding the arrests.
