Tbilisi Outlines Measures to Defuse S.Ossetia Tensions

The Georgian Foreign Ministry said on September 8 that Tbilisi remains committed to a peaceful resolution of the South Ossetian conflict and outlined measures to defuse tensions and prevent provocations in the region.

?The Georgian side thinks that only the direct involvement of impartial guarantors [into the peace process], demilitarization, intensive monitoring of the entire territory [of breakaway South Ossetia], control of the Roki Tunnel [which links the breakaway region with the Russian Federation] and other effective measures will guarantee the prevention of provocations and implementation of the peace process,? the Georgian Foreign Ministry said.

It also noted that the September 8 clash, which left three South Ossetian militiamen and one Georgian officer dead and two others injured, has demonstrated that the Russian peacekeeping forces “are not willing to contribute to the peace process.?
