Burjanadze Calls on Rebel Militias to Surrender Arms

Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze has called on Kodori-based rebel warlord Emzar Kvitsiani and his militiamen to surrender their arms and cease defying the central authorities.

?I call on Kvitsiani and others not to stand against their own country and own people,? Burjanadze said at the Parliament?s session on July 25.

She said that ?a lot of forces? are interested in fueling up tensions in the Kodori gorge, which is the only territory of breakaway Abkhazia not controlled by the secessionist Abkhaz authorities.

?We will manage to settle this incident as soon as possible,? the Parliamentary Chairperson said.

On July 23 Georgian Parliamentary Chairperson Nino Burjanadze did not rule out a police operation in Kodori gorge if the situation does not improve there in a few days.
