Tbilisi has denied reports that the Abkhaz coast guard opened fire on two Georgian coast guard vessels in the Abkhaz section of Georgia?s territorial waters on January 23. The reports, officials in Tbilisi said, were ?misinformation.?
Apsnipress news agency quoted Kristian Bzhania, a spokesperson for the Abkhaz leader, as saying that after coming under fire, the Georgian vessels left ?Abkhaz territorial waters? off the coast of the Gali district. Bzhania warned that ?tougher measures? would be taken next time.
The Georgian Border Police, however, said there weren’t even any Georgian vessels in the area at the time.
