The authorities in breakaway Abkhazia have said they have no plans to cede territory to Russia.
Tbilisi-based Rustavi 2 TV claimed on September 17 that Russia and breakaway Abkhazia had agreed to move the border, which currently lies on the Psou River, about 40 kilometers south to the Bzipi River. The report said the change was being done for security reasons in the run-up to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
However, Abkhaz leader Sergey Bagapsh told RIA Novosti news agency on September 17 the report was ?nonsense.?
?Rustavi 2 TV can fabricate anything. This is but another information ploy by the Georgian side. Any movement of the border is out of the question,? Bagapsh said.
The foreign minister of the breakaway region, Sergey Shamba, has also denied the report, saying it was ?misinformation.?
?This speculation is groundless. The issue has not been discussed by the Russian and Abkhaz sides,? RIA Novosti quoted Shamba as saying.
