Merab Kishmaria has been appointed as Abkhazia’a new Defense Minister by the breakaway region’s leader, Sergey Bagapsh, the Abkhaz leader?s website reported on June 26.
The previous incumbent, Sultan Sosnaliyev, resigned in May, citing ?private reasons? for his decision.
During the armed conflict with Georgia, Kishmaria was commander of Abkhaz troops on the eastern front in 1992-93. He had served as First Deputy Defense Minister since 2005.
