Abkhazia to Build Military Base in Gali – Parliamentary Commission

Authorities in breakaway Abkhazia are planning, with Russian assistance, to build a military base in the Gali district, the Georgian parliamentary Commission on Territorial Integrity said in a statement on June 11.

The proposal involves the eviction of at least seven households from the village of Primorsk in this predominately Georgian-populated district, according to the statement.

Neither the Abkhaz nor Russians have commented on the statement.

The commission said that construction of the base in the restricted-weapons zone was a violation of the 1994 Moscow Ceasefire Agreement. The development, it said, would do nothing to help confidence-building between the antagonists.

The commission also stressed that Russia?s involvement in the project once again brought into question Russia?s impartiality and its fitness as mediator in the conflict resolution process. The statement went on to call for ?the withdrawal of the Russian peacekeeping forces.?
