Georgian Interior Minister Calls on Russia’s Ivanov ‘to Show Respect’

Georgian Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili has called on Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergey Ivanov “to show more respect” while speaking about Georgia.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Ivanov said that “beacons of democracy like Georgia and Ukraine only undermine [the concept of] democracy.”

“When people see this total mess, [they] will say we don’t need any democracy at all,” Ivanov said in the interview.

“There is more democracy in Georgia. No skinheads are roaming the streets of Tbilisi. Political opponents and journalists are not murdered and poisoned. Georgian police are not extorting money everywhere from Georgians and foreign guests. Taking all this into consideration, I want to advice Mr. Ivanov to speak of Georgia more respectfully,” the Georgian Interior Minister told reporters on April 22.
