Tbilisi Closely Watches Developments in Ukraine

Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili said that the current crisis in Ukraine is an ?internal matter.? He did, however, call on the Ukrainian leadership to resolve the dispute ?within a legal framework.?

Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko dissolved Parliament on April 2, thus shattering a fragile power-sharing deal with his rival, Prime Minister Victor Yanukovich.

?We are interested in stability in Ukraine. Internal political developments are the internal affairs of Ukraine and not an issue for us, but we call on our colleagues there to resolve the dispute within a legal framework and to maintain the course towards democracy, which, as we are sure, has been chosen by the Ukrainian people,? Bezhuashvili told reporters before a government session on April 3.

On March 30-31 the Georgian Foreign Minister paid a working visit to Ukraine and met with Prime Minister Victor Yanukovich.

Unlike the Foreign Minister?s cautious comments, an influential Georgian lawmaker from the ruling National Movement party, Givi Targamadze, who is currently in Kiev, did not refrain from showing his sympathies.

He hailed President Yushchenko?s decision, saying that ?future developments now largely depend on the strong will of President Yushchenko.”

“There is no reason for him to step back,? Givi Targamadze, who chairs the parliamentary committee for defense and security, told Tbilisi-based Rustavi 2 TV on April 3.
