Georgia Rotates Troops in Iraq

550 servicemen from the 33rd Light Infantry Battalion of the Third Infantry Brigade left for Iraq on March 23.

The soldiers will replace those of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the Georgian Defense Ministry.

The 33rd Battalion will perform peacekeeping duties in the capital, Baghdad.

On March 9 President Saakashvili said that Georgia would increase its military presence in Iraq from the current 850 to 2,000 troops. The deployment, however, will be ?for a limited period of time? – a maximum of one year.
