Tbilisi, Tskhinvali Exchange Accusations over Shooting

A Georgian checkpoint near the village of Ergneti in the South Ossetian conflict zone came under mortar fire overnight on February 1 from the outskirts of Tskhinvali, the Office of the Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues reported.

According to the same report, Georgian law enforcers were forced to open fire in response, as a result of which “one attacker was injured.”

Meanwhile, the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee confirmed on February 1 that the incident took place; however, it added that those in Tskhinvali opened fire after being attacked from the Georgian villages of Nikozi and Ergneti with mortar launchers and assault rifles.

Commander of the Joint Peacekeeping Troops Marat Kulakhmetov said in a telephone conversation with Rustavi 2 television that an investigation will reveal which side launched the attack.

A similar incident took place on January 28 when three South Ossetian militiamen were injured as a result of shootout near Tskhinvali. Shooting was also reported on January 29 near Ergneti village.
