OSCE Chairman Concerned over South Ossetia Incidents

The OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, expressed concern on January 29 over a series of violent incidents in the South Ossetian conflict zone and called on the parties involved to resume talks.

The statement of the new OSCE Chairman-in-Office refers to two incidents in the conflict zone: one involving a January 28 shootout that left three South Ossetian militiamen injured, and an earlier incident on January 15 when a landmine explosion injured two Russian peacekeepers.

“I am concerned about the increasing number of violent incidents in the zone of conflict. It is of vital importance that meaningful political dialogue between all parties to the conflict be resumed as soon as possible to look for effective ways of reducing tension,” Minister Moratinos said.

The Chairman-in-Office urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any actions or statements which would further inflame the situation.
