Italy Supports Georgia’s Cooperation with NATO, EU

Italy encourages and supports Georgia’s cooperation with NATO within the Intensified Dialogue framework, and with the European Union in the context of its Neighbourhood Policy, the Italian Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued shortly after a meeting between visiting Georgian Foreign Minister Gela Bezhuashvili and his Italian counterpart Massimo D’Alema on January 24.

The two ministers discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, “frozen conflicts” in the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as current relations between Georgia and Russia.

“Italy, as a member of the United Nations Security Council for the 2007-2008 biennial, intends to contribute to the search for sustainable solutions, foster the relaxation of tensions and encourage the resumption of direct negotiation among the parties concerned,” a statement issued by the Italian Foreign Ministry reads.
