PACE President Hails Russian Ambassador’s Return to Tbilisi

President of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) René van der Linden said on January 19 that he welcomes the return of Russian Ambassador Vyacheslav Kovalenko to Tbilisi.

“During my visit to Moscow last week I discussed with the authorities, and in particular with Foreign Minister [Sergey] Lavrov, the need for small steps to be taken to de-escalate tensions with Georgia. I see this as one such positive step. As always PACE stands ready to help further with this process,” the PACE President said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on January 18 that Moscow is sending its ambassador back to Tbilisi, almost four months after recalling him over a spy row.

Russian news agency Interfax reported that Ambassador Kovalenko plans to arrive in Tbilisi on January 22.
