The opposition New Rights party spoke out against the government”s decision to allocate a GEL 125 million loan to the four gas importer companies in Georgia to compensate for the increase of gas and electricity tariff during the winter period.
The opposition party, in particular, has criticized the part of the loan agreement that calls for the loans to be covered by higher prices for consumers.
“This loan will be covered with new tariffs imposed on households. So our fears that it [the loan] will become a burden for the population have been confirmed… This means that the government has cheated its own population,” MP Mamuka Katsitadze of the New Rights party said on January 17.
The party has been demanding that the government subsidize increased consumer tariffs.
“These are absolutely unserious allegations that are being made without taking into consideration the current political and economic situation. They [the opposition] are searching for “conspiracy theories” against the population in every move made by the authorities,” MP Maia Nadiradze, the ruling majority leader in the Parliament, told reporters on January 17.
