MP Quits Opposition Faction

MP Gocha Jojua from the opposition National Forum party has quit the Democratic Front parliamentary faction, which mainly unites MPs from the Republican and Conservative parties.

Jojua cited some of the other faction members? readiness to cooperate with the authorities on drafting a new constitution as a reason behind his decision.

The newly created opposition party National Forum announced on January 11 that the government is trying to use the opposition to create an imitation of democracy, and called on opposition parties to not cooperate with the authorities.

MP Jojua said on January 12 that he is now negotiating with some non-partisan lawmakers to form a new faction in the Parliament.

Meanwhile, reports said on January 11 that MP Koka Guntsadze, a former member of the opposition New Rights party, has officially been registered as a new member of the Democratic Front parliamentary faction.
