Abkhaz Officials Deny Attack on Georgian Police Post

The Abkhaz side has strongly denied Georgian media reports that a Georgian policeman died and another was injured after Abkhaz militiamen attacked a police checkpoint in the Georgian village of Ganmukhuri in the conflict zone early on January 5.

Abkhaz police chief in the Gali district of the breakaway region, Laurens Kogonia, said that the Georgian policeman died in a skirmish with Georgian criminal groups in the Zugdidi district of Georgia.

?The fact that the Georgian authorities disseminate false information, laying the entire responsibility on the Abkhaz side, is a provocation,? Apsnipress news agency quoted Kogonia as saying.

?The Abkhaz side has nothing to do with the incident in the Zugdidi district. We have become accustomed to the fact that the Georgian authorities and mass media provoke the situation in the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict zone,? Ruslan Kishmaria, the Abkhaz leader?s envoy in the Gali district, said, according to Apsnipress.
