Minister: Resuming Transport Links with Georgia Not Planned

Russia does not yet plan to resume transport links with Georgia, Russian Transport Minister Igor Levitin said on January 5, Itar-Tass news agency reported.

Levitin, who is paying a working visit to the United States, told the Russian agency that he holds ?regular consultations? over the issue with the Georgian side, but currently there are no plans to reopen transport links.

Russia cut air, sea, land and railway links, and postal communication with Georgia starting from October 3, 2006 ? one day after Georgia released four Russian military officers accused by Tbilisi of espionage.

Officials in Moscow cited commercial reasons, as well as debt disputes as the motives behind the decision, but Tbilisi claims the move was political.
