Tskhinvali Concerned about ‘Alternative Government’

Tbilisi’s attempts to legitimize the so-called alternative government of South Ossetia is a step towards undermining the current negotiating format – the Joint Control Commission (JCC) over conflict resolution issues – the breakaway South Ossetian authorities said on December 2.

The South Ossetian side of the JCC, which also involves negotiators from the Georgian, Russian and Russia’s North Ossetian sides, said in a statement that the presence of Merab Antadze, the Georgian State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues, at the inauguration ceremony of Dimitri Sanakoev was a clear sign that Tbilisi “has chosen a way towards stirring tensions between Georgia and South Ossetia.”

“The Georgian side and its western patrons made it clear that they will further push for a provocative argument about the existence of a ‘diarchy’ in South Ossetia,” a statement posted on the South Ossetian Press and Information Committee’s web-site reads.

On December 2 State Minister Merab Antadze said that Tbilisi does not recognizes the so-called alternative election in South Ossetia, which led to Tbilisi-loyal Dimitri Sanakoev becoming ‘President.’ But he added that Tbilisi recognizes that “a new reality” has emerged in the region as a result of the elections.

He also said that the international community should take into consideration the fact that a “new force” has appeared in the region.
